Pray Psalm 91
Using
Different Versions of Scripture
Over the years,
scholars have studied the Hebrew and Greek origins of
Scripture to get a clearer understanding of what is being
revealed through God’s inspired Word.
“What”, you ask, “the King James Version
is not the original?” ;)
Meanings subtly change as a passage is translated from one
language to another.
Able scholars who prayerfully search out the cultural and
contextual meanings of the Greek and Hebrew scriptures give
us a Technicolor screen for viewing Bible passages.
From these studies come a number of inspiring translations
of Scripture.
Consider :
The Amplified
Bible
The Message
The Book
These translations include expansions of many words that
would be single words in the New King James Version. Thus,
the passages are longer, but the expanded words open up new
windows of understanding.
We are all uniquely created and uniquely shaped by our
upbringing. In our uniqueness, one word will impact you,
but not me…and vice versa.
Having access to the wealth of possible words in any given
passage increases the possibility of having an “ah
ha!” moment with that passage. The “Ah
ha’s” are wonderful to pray. They have such
spiritual vitality.
Try
it, if you haven’t.
You’ll love it!
How
to Use Different Versions in Praying Psalm 91
If you are
looking for a version of Psalm 91 to use in the simple
method of prayer, check different versions. One will stand
out to you. Use that one. If it stands out, that means this
version of Psalm 91 is coming alive in you. Go for it!
Another approach is to take the tact used by the compilers
of
The New Testament from 26 Translations.
Work with just
one verse. Look it up in several translations. Write out
the whole verse in your base translation. Then beneath this
add the phrases or words you find that differ from your
base.
Here is a brief example from
The New Testament from 26
Translations:
Romans
8:31b
If God be
for us, who can be against us? (base scripture)
If God is
on our side, who can there be against us? TCNT
Just this – If God is for us, what does it matter who
may be against us – Nor
The second and third selections are from non-base
translation and the initials at the end of the line tell
which translation you’re looking at. This is a brief
entry, as I said. Some verses will have 7 to 9 offerings
after the base scripture.
If you are working the longer method, having a list of
translations for a given verse is a great start. Good food
for contemplation! Studying Scripture in this comparison
mode really hooked me on Scripture…decades back.
